Lagrangian unknottedness in Stein surfaces

We show that the space of Lagrangian spheres inside the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere is contractible. We then discuss the phenomenon of Lagrangian unknottedness in other Stein surfaces. There exist homotopic Lagrangian spheres which are not Hamiltonian isotopic, but we show that in a typical case all such spheres are still equivalent under a symplectomorphism.

A Standard Form for Incompressible Surfaces in a Handlebody

Let Σ be a compact surface and let I be the unit interval. This paper gives a standard form for all 2-sided incompressible surfaces in the 3-manifold Σ×I. Since Σ × I is a handlebody when Σ has boundary, this standard form applies to incompressible surfaces in a handlebody.

Symplectic Mapping Class Groups of Some Stein and Rational Surfaces

In this paper we compute the homotopy groups of the symplectomorphism groups of the 3-, 4and 5-point blow-ups of the projective plane (considered as monotone symplectic Del Pezzo surfaces). Along the way, we need to compute the homotopy groups of the compactly supported symplectomorphism groups of the cotangent bundle of RP and of C∗×C. We also make progress in the case of the An-Milnor fibres:...

Compact Stein Surfaces with Boundary as Branched Covers of B

We prove that Stein surfaces with boundary coincide up to orientation preserving diffeomorphisms with simple branched coverings of B4 whose branch set is a positive braided surface. As a consequence, we have that a smooth oriented 3-manifold is Stein fillable iff it has a positive open-book decomposition.

On Weinstein Conjecture for Stein Surfaces with Boundary

The purpose of this paper is to confirm the Weinstein conjecture for Stein surfaces with boundary whose canonical bundles are non-trivial. The key ingredient in the proof is a theorem of Taubes which provides the existence of pseudo-holomorphic curves in a symplectic 4-manifold with b+ > 1 representing the Poincare dual of the canonical class and a theorem of Lisca and Matic which embeds the St...
